Product description
Product description
The ATH-WP900 is a portable, over-ear headphone with elegant flamed maple housings, offering not only a striking aesthetic but also first-class hi-fi sound. Maple is a hard, dense wood that is frequently used in instrument making, particularly for guitars and violins. For the ATH-WP900, a thin flamed maple veneer was applied to solid, milled maple housings to achieve a clear, natural sound.
The craftsmanship of Japanese guitar maker Fujigen brings out the inimitable grain of the precious wood perfectly, making each pair of headphones a unique product that only gains beauty over the years. The exclusive 53 mm drivers with a powerful magnetic circuit and a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated diaphragm, along with the top-mounted PCB, ensure outstanding audio reproduction across the entire frequency spectrum.
The specially developed angled baffle improves the airflow between the front and back of the diaphragm to realize optimal bass and midrange reproduction, and also enables an ideal position of the ear cups – for a more comfortable fit and better isolation properties.
Another highlight is the A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connectors, which allow for a secure connection with the two included detachable 1.2 m cables. One cable is equipped with a gold-plated 3.5 mm stereo mini-plug for use with smartphones and standard audio devices, while the other features a gold-plated 4.4 mm balanced (5-pole) plug for use with high-resolution digital audio players and compatible headphone amplifiers. For long-wearing comfort, the ear pads and headband of the ATH-WP900 are covered in soft synthetic leather, and the swiveling ear cups fold flat for transport (carrying case included). What does “high-resolution audio” mean? Many music fans believe that high-resolution audio formats were introduced with the compact disc in 1982, but the limited storage capacity of such an audio CD (standard resolution 44.1 kHz / 16-bit) did not allow the original recording to be truly reproduced in its entirety.
With the introduction and rapidly growing popularity of the MP3 format, this problem became even more apparent. The necessary compression of MP3 files leads to a not insignificant loss of audio information, which also impairs playback quality. However, with the development and increasing availability of lossless audio file formats, higher internet speeds, and larger storage media (the data of which is also transmitted in ever-smaller packets), the way was cleared, and more and more devices came onto the market capable of recording and playing back true hi-res audio material – generally defined by a resolution of 96 kHz / 24-bit or higher. The “Hi-Res Audio” logo certifies these products for high-resolution media according to the Hi-Res Audio standard, which requires a transducer frequency of at least 40 kHz for headphones.
Audio-Technica has been producing premium audiophile headphones since 1972 and is therefore ideally positioned to develop high-quality audio solutions that meet the requirements of the Hi-Res Audio format and optimally reproduce high-resolution media.
