JL Audio was founded in 1975 by James Birch and Lucio Proni in Florida. The two Americans initially started out in the loudspeaker market and the DIY speaker sector. The company name is derived from the founders' initials and the addition of "Audio." In the early 80s, as car hi-fi systems became popular, Birch, Proni, and Stephen Seidl, who had since joined the team, focused on car audio, particularly subwoofers. JL Audio made its first appearance with a subwoofer for home systems at the 1991 CES in Las Vegas. Since then, the product range has been steadily expanded and today includes a wide assortment, from entry-level woofers to high-end active subwoofers.
