Ten years have passed since the launch of the Acutus Reference. Back then, no one could have guessed what a major improvement the Reference would be over the original Acutus, and now this legendary turntable is taking another giant leap forward. The critically acclaimed Acutus Reference SP turntable is now joined by the new Acutus Reference Mono SP. The large, highly powerful motor remains unchanged. This drive is not just any synchronous motor; it is nothing less than a highly optimized "beast" of a motor. Other manufacturers have also wanted to use this motor, but they failed to control its power and the resulting vibrations. We carry out very extensive modifications to the motor and replace many of its internal components. The frame structure of the motor consists of individual rods, which we connect to form an overall structure to reduce internal vibrations. We isolate the field coils and use only matched pairs of coils, which are combined with individually tuned power supply units. Thanks to these modifications, mechanical vibrations that would directly affect playback quality are completely eliminated. This is why the Acutus has an extremely low noise floor and plays free from the masking effect produced by less powerful motors and power supplies.
The new power supply unit is, in a sense, an integrated amplifier with a DSP-controlled preamp and a stereo power amp. Each channel of the amplifier drives one of the two coils inside the motor. Because of these fundamental similarities, optimizing the turntable power supply that drives the Acutus's synchronous motor is comparable to switching from an integrated amplifier to a pre-power amplifier combination. Those who witnessed the sound improvement during development could hardly believe it was the same record being played. The difference is not merely a matter of taste or a subtle affair, but an immediately obvious improvement in every respect. The Acutus Reference Mono SP outperforms the Acutus Reference with a lower noise floor, an extension of the bass and treble spectrums, and a significant increase in dynamics. The naturalness of the playback is astonishing, an intimacy that truly gets under your skin and touches the soul.
The amplifier stage has been redeveloped far beyond the expense of most audio amplifiers to drive each individual motor coil in dual-mono operation. Rather than cutting costs and thus limiting quality, we have built the new power supply entirely in a mono design: it contains all the components of two Reference power supplies with two 1 kVA capacity transformers, dual-regulated output stages, two huge capacitor banks, and a dual soft-start circuit. This dual start-up control is important so that your household circuit breaker does not trip when you switch on the power supply: unregulated, it would attempt to draw nearly 100 amps from the mains at once. The housing design of the power supply perfectly matches the preamplifiers and mono amplifiers of the Reference series. We thus offer the Acutus in three quality levels. Owners of an Acutus can purchase the new power supply as an upgrade.
