With the OVATION CS 8.3 Black Edition, we present the flagship of our all-in-one CS device series. By using the most elaborately selected components, we have created a special edition of our universal all-in-one player that exceeds the highest sonic expectations.
The high-performance version of the OVATION CS 8.3 also distinguishes itself visually from the standard version, which remains available. All housing parts and controls are finished completely in night black. The "Black Edition" logo is emblazoned on the top cover.

The high-performance X-STREAM Engine® is designed to receive virtually all digital signals. The D/A converters, hand-picked and selected for this edition, are perfectly prepared for the absolutely authentic conversion of digital signals, regardless of the digital source or the built-in Pure CD drive. A true all-in-one player compactly housed in a single, solid aluminum OVATION line chassis. We therefore call our creation simply: CS (Compact with Streaming).

All digital music signals are passed to the tube stage designed by AVM after the Digital-to-Analog (D/A) conversion. In the Black Edition, we equip this tube stage with a tube modified specifically for this model and mark these precisely selected tubes with a black "Black Edition" imprint. The special amplification circuit is based on our decades of experience. This circuit we developed is extremely true to sound and allows for years of unclouded music enjoyment, as the tubes, manufactured specifically for AVM, are operated conservatively, guaranteeing decades of undisturbed operation.

In terms of sound, the CS 8.3 captivates with the musical charm of the fully balanced double-quad D/A converters. We use ESS SABRE 9018 reference DACs, employing only the best 2% of the D/A converters delivered to us pre-selected. To drive these D/A converters to maximum performance, we have additionally temperature-stabilized the high-precision clocks in the Black Edition. The DACs are supplied by a doubly regulated separate power supply, which is also highly refined in the Black Edition. These circuits are furthermore housed channel-separated on their own circuit boards, thus enabling absolutely perfect channel separation.

As a result, signal-to-noise ratios are significantly improved compared to the CS 8.3 standard version. In addition, these converters can also process DSD128 (5.6MHz) signals. The upsampling electronics allow for adjustable sampling rates on the S/PDIF inputs (44.1-192kHz) and enable the selection between two filter characteristics (smooth / steep). In the process, the clock of the digital signals is completely regenerated, and through this effort, jitter is effectively and practically completely eliminated. Furthermore, the CS 8.3 can also downsample; this function becomes important for playlists with different sampling rates and formats from different sources. The signal routing of the digital signals is consistently impedance-controlled.
The USB input is XMOS-based, galvanically isolated, and always operates asynchronously. Without a driver up to 96kHz, with a suitable driver up to 384 kHz and with DSD 128.

In principle, we use only 4-layer multi-layer boards in the OVATION CS 8.3, the inner layers of which serve the power supply or house the ground lines. The entire signal path is completely DC-coupled. Three low-noise switching power supplies provide power to the individual parts separately for analog + and – (including so-called low-drop-out regulators), while one power supply powers all digital circuits, with the digital audio area being separately regulated once again.

Not only are the individual parts of the CS 8.3 separated electrically; on the circuit boards, we also separate circuit parts spatially, thus maintaining proper distance between circuit parts so they cannot influence each other. This separation can also be seen in a massive wall that extends across the entire device. This mechanical partition effectively prevents electrical and mechanical interference; this "Chinese Wall" effectively shields the power supply units from the rest of the device. The grounds for analog and digital circuit parts are also separated.

The massive & perfectly crafted night-black aluminum housing comes entirely from our neighboring town of Baden-Baden and is assembled without visible screws. The all-black trim parts are also manufactured locally.
The Pure CD drive is supplied exclusively to AVM by the renowned manufacturer TEAC. Only AVM is supplied with these unique drives worldwide. The special feature of this drive, which is based on a monofocal laser, is pure CD playback according to the so-called Red Book standard and signal output as an S/PDIF signal to the subsequent D/A converter stages. The sonic advantage of this drive is thus reserved exclusively for AVM. In the CS 8.3, the drive is additionally strongly noise-dampened with thick acoustic felt mats.
The CS 8.3 is completely software-upgradable. Furthermore, important parts of the digital circuits can also be easily replaced; the entire D/A converter board and the XMOS input board are interchangeable, making the CS 8.3 hardware-upgradable as well.
