This dongle dramatically upgrades smartphones. The Cayin RU7 is a USB DAC and headphone amplifier in one – built to provide a high-fidelity alternative to the typically weak headphone outputs of mobile devices.

Connected to the USB interface of phones and tablets, the Cayin RU7 converts songs stored locally or streamed from a music service with the precision of a discrete 1-bit resistor network DAC developed by Cayin.

The RU7 meets the high expectations of demanding hi-fi enthusiasts for mobile music playback and compensates for the limited audio capabilities of smartphones, computers, or tablets. To do this, the DAC is simply connected to the USB-C port. Once connected between the playback device and the headphones, the RU7 takes over the conversion of the digital audio stream into an audible analog signal.

The signal conversion is handled by a discrete 1-bit resistor network in a ladder design featuring 128 thin-film resistors arranged in four groups of 32, which has already demonstrated its outstanding performance in the current Cayin N7 DAP. Furthermore, the DAC processes PCM signals up to 384 kHz and DSD streams up to DSD256.

Also adopted from the Cayin N7 is the All-to-DSD mode. This allows high-quality streams in DSD format to be processed natively on a smartphone or signals to be converted into the format before being passed through the converter network. Signals can also be decoded as PCM streams up to a sample rate of 384 kHz.

The RU7 features a 3.5 mm jack and a balanced 4.4 mm Pentaconn connection. The sound quality of the balanced four-channel technology can get even more out of high-resolution material when using compatible headphones. The jack output provides 160 mW, and the balanced output provides as much as 400 mW. The impedance is 32 ohms for both connections. Even power-hungry headphones should therefore be able to perform with full enthusiasm with the RU7.

The simple and elegant design of the mobile converter in dongle format is also impressive. The rounded edges and the black finish ensure a stylish look. The OLED display with a resolution of 128×64 pixels provides precise information about the data rate and playback volume.

Accessories include a leather case. There are also magnets that allow the DAC to be attached securely to a smartphone case without leaving residue. With the included USB-C cable, the RU7 can be easily connected to Android smartphones or iPads. A USB-A adapter completes the set.
