More and more people are discovering that a computer, a USB cable, and a USB DAC offer a very good way to listen to music. There is no denying that USB cables are extremely cheap and, in theory, have no influence on the quality of the digital signal they transmit. Our problem is that every time we sit down and listen, we find that they do indeed have an influence.

The Shawline USB cable has been designed and tested according to our usual principle of using materials that we know work well and utilizing the conductor geometries that we established during the development of our Sarum and Signature USB cables. Only when we are completely satisfied that the cable brings a significant improvement does it go into production.

The Shawline USB is built using high-quality, silver-plated signal and power conductors. The power conductors are shielded separately from the signal conductors, and the insulation consists of a special hard-jacket polyethylene designed for high-speed signal transmission. There is also an overall shield, so that the signal cables, in combination with the internal shielding, are protected up to very high frequencies.

Like our Signature USB cables, the Shawline USB also uses a specially developed version of the ARAY conductor geometry. The cable is built by hand with ChorAlloy™-plated USB-A or USB-B plugs.

We would have liked to supply the cable with Micro-USB plugs, but the challenge of connecting our thicker conductors means that we could not create a mechanically reliable connection. High-performance miniature components were a real challenge. In recent years, we have used our USB cables with USB-B to Micro-USB adapters. Adapters are not our preferred solution and should generally be avoided whenever possible. In this particular case, however, things get interesting. We conducted some experiments where we compared some of the available Micro-USB cables with our own USB cables and an adapter. The restrictions that the Micro-USB plug imposes on the conductor diameter significantly limit the length and the performance potential of Micro-USB cables. We achieved better results – especially with the high-quality portable devices we tried – by using our own USB cables together with an adapter. This means that if you have a decent DAC with a Micro-USB input, don't be afraid to experiment with adapters. We achieved the best performance this way and it is worth trying.
