The highly refined EPICON 2 bookshelf speaker impresses with fantastic sound quality. Do not be deceived by the speaker's size – even if it is the smallest in the EPICON family.

Ideally, the EPICON 2 should be played on the custom-made stand available as an accessory – then the speaker offers an astonishingly spacious and precise three-dimensional soundstage that fulfills even the highest demands of discerning audiophile listeners.

The two-way speaker features a 165 mm woofer/midrange driver and a soft dome tweeter. The technological innovations of the larger EPICON models contribute to offering a speaker with the EPICON 2 that sounds far better than its compact dimensions would suggest.

The EPICON 2 perfectly demonstrates the essence of this new series: minimal signal reproduction loss... or to put it bluntly: transparency and wealth of detail at a previously unattainable level!

This speaker has an extremely linear and coherent frequency response and is perfectly suited for use in small to medium-sized rooms. The transmission range of the woofer rolls off gently at the low end, and the speaker reproduces very low frequencies as well. In most configurations, the EPICON 2 should therefore sound like a significantly larger box.

Within its frequency range, the EPICON 2 achieves the same reproduction quality as its larger sisters, the EPICON 6 and 8. It is the new compact speaker for purists with the highest sonic requirements.

Linear Drive Magnet System

One of the technological highlights of the EPICON series is the Linear Drive Magnet System. It is used in all woofers and midrange drivers and is based on the powder-based magnetic material SMC ("Soft Magnetic Compound"). The use of SMC brings many advantages, but most importantly, it significantly reduces distortion in the magnet drive caused by mechanical losses. The unique ability of SMC to combine high magnetic conductivity with very low electrical conductivity (1/10,000th of iron) enabled the development of an outstanding speaker driver without the disadvantages that previously had to be accepted. Distortions and thus colorations in sound reproduction could be significantly reduced.

TWEETER

The EPICON 2 features a tweeter with a 29 mm, ultra-light soft dome. Thanks to a stable die-cast aluminum base plate and its own dedicated housing chamber, it is very well protected against any interference originating from inside the cabinet.

Thanks to an ultra-thin magnetic fluid for cooling, the dome exhibits a very high saturation limit, which significantly increases power handling. At the same time, this ensures excellent control of voice coil movement – especially at very high sound pressure levels. The dome material itself is very light and so thin that the coating contributes a great deal to the structural rigidity of the diaphragm.

WOOFER

A 165 mm woofer/midrange driver provides a profound bass foundation for the EPICON 2. It works so powerfully that no separate subwoofer is required, even in small to medium-sized rooms.

The latest generation of wood fiber cones features a new impregnation process followed by a special coating applied after assembly. Wood fibers stiffen the cone diaphragms, which consist of very light pulp. This structural stiffening exhibits excellent properties in every respect and also dampens the so-called "break-up" of the diaphragms that causes disturbing partial oscillations.

In order to carry out this process – as with production in general – within very tight tolerances, the introduction of in-house production of speaker drivers was an important step. The woofers of the DALI EPICON series were not only developed at DALI's Danish headquarters, they are also manufactured there!

MULTI-LAYER CABINETS

Each side panel of the EPICON 2 consists of six individual layers of MDF glued together. These are firmly anchored to a 53 mm thick, multi-layer MDF cabinet rear panel. CNC milling creates the ultra-precise cutouts and holes for the bass reflex ports and connection terminals on the back of the cabinet.

The 33 mm thick dual-layer front baffle ensures that the energy mobilized by the drivers is utilized acoustically and is not lost in the form of cabinet vibrations. The curved shape of the front baffle also helps to provide an acoustic platform that is as stable and torsion-resistant as possible.

On the back of the cabinet, the associated bass reflex port is found in close proximity to the woofer. The reflex tube is flared at both ends to avoid disturbing turbulence. On the bottom of the cabinet, the hard-wired crossover is also fixed in its own enclosure – and is therefore not exposed to the dynamic air pressure changes within the bass reflex chamber.

The precisely calculated cabinet volume contributes just as much to the unique sound experience of the EPICON 2 as the carefully positioned cabinet bracing or the consideration of the DALI principle of ensuring optimal timing and unobstructed airflow in every respect.

The cabinet surface consists of real wood veneer that is lacquered a total of ten times. Between each step, every single layer is polished by hand to achieve a deep, high-gloss, and elegant surface. A ten-layer lacquer finish with a thickness of about 2 mm also ensures a particularly durable finish. The cutting of the openings for drivers, reflex ports, and connection terminals takes place after the lacquering process to ensure a precise fit during assembly.
