Product description
With the EPICON VOKAL, we have developed an uncompromising center loudspeaker for all multi-channel fans. Its driver configuration, featuring two 165 mm woofers and DALI's hybrid tweeter module, is identical to the EPICON 6, ensuring a reproduction that is just as transparent, rich in detail, and tonally perfectly matched to the other speaker models in the series.
The EPICON VOKAL thus harmonizes optimally with the three main speakers of the EPICON series and brings every movie soundtrack and every multi-channel music piece to life in an extremely realistic way and with the desired sound pressure. The center speaker can be used in any multi-channel configuration.
50% of the acoustic energy of a standard feature film is reproduced through the center channel. The EPICON VOKAL performs this task in an exemplary manner. It reproduces every word spoken by the actors – whether spoken normally, shouted loudly, or whispered softly – with such brilliance and clarity that it is always easy to understand without any problems. In addition, noises and sounds are also staged in a breathtakingly realistic and precise manner.
LINEAR DRIVE MAGNET SYSTEM
One of the technological highlights of the EPICON series is the Linear Drive Magnet System. It is used in all woofers and mid-range drivers and is based on the powdered magnetic material SMC ("Soft Magnetic Compound"). The use of SMC brings many advantages, but above all, it significantly reduces the distortions in the magnet drive caused by mechanical losses. The unique ability of SMC to combine high magnetic conductivity with very low electrical conductivity (1/10,000th of iron) enabled the development of an outstanding loudspeaker drive without the disadvantages previously accepted. Distortion and thus coloration in sound reproduction could be significantly reduced.
How SMC can be used to optimize a loudspeaker's characteristics regarding hysteresis, current linearity, and voice coil inductance is explained in detail in the technical information for the EPICON series, the Whitepaper. You can download the Whitepaper further down on this page in the download section.
HYBRID TWEETER
In the interest of the most transparent and realistic reproduction of even the most subtle high-frequency details, the EPICON series is equipped with the unique DALI hybrid tweeter module. This tweeter design has already been used in our earlier high-end series – but for the EPICON models, we have developed an entirely new dome. The new module consists of a 29 mm, particularly lightweight dome membrane and a 10 x 55 mm ribbon tweeter. The combination of a dome tweeter with a ribbon tweeter represents the ideal solution for reproducing high frequencies.
Both tweeters are very well protected against any interference originating from the interior of the cabinet. The dome and the ribbon share a common, extremely stable die-cast aluminum base plate and each has its own enclosure. This ensures that the sensitive tweeters are not exposed to disruptive resonances.
A particularly low resonance frequency, high power handling, and exceptional reserves for high sound pressure and extreme excursions are the characteristics of our particularly large-dimensioned dome tweeter. It kicks in on the EPICON VOKAL at 2.75 kHz. The dome then operates up to its transmission limit well above 20 kHz, without being faded out by the crossover. Thanks to an ultra-low-viscosity magnetic fluid for cooling, the dome has a very high saturation limit, which significantly increases power handling. At the same time, this ensures excellent control of voice coil movement, especially at very high sound pressures. The dome material itself is very light and so thin that the coating contributes significantly to the structural rigidity of the membrane.
The ribbon covers an extremely wide frequency spectrum and possesses superb dispersion of very high frequencies. Its operating range begins above 10 kHz, but the ribbon reaches its full performance between 15 kHz and well over 30 kHz, i.e., well above the audible frequency range.
WOOFER
Two 165 mm woofers provide a profound bass foundation for the EPICON VOKAL. They work so powerfully that no separate subwoofer is required, even in larger rooms or at higher playback levels. Both drivers feature the DALI-exclusive revolutionary Linear Drive Magnet System.
The latest generation of wood fiber cones features a new impregnation with a special coating applied after assembly. Wood fibers stiffen the cone membranes, which are made of very lightweight pulp. This structural stiffening exhibits excellent properties in every respect and also dampens the so-called "break-up" of the membranes that causes disruptive partial vibrations.
In order to carry out this process – as with general production as a whole – within very tight tolerances, the introduction of in-house loudspeaker driver production was an important step. The woofers of the DALI EPICON series were not only developed at the Danish DALI headquarters but are also manufactured there!
MULTI-LAYER CABINETS
Each side panel of the EPICON VOKAL consists of six individual, glued-together layers of MDF boards. These are firmly anchored to the 53 mm thick, multi-layer MDF rear panel. CNC milling machines are used to create the ultra-precise cutouts and holes for the bass reflex ports and connection panels on the back of the cabinet.
The 33 mm thick, two-layer front baffle ensures that the energy mobilized by the drivers is utilized acoustically and not lost in the form of cabinet vibrations. The curved shape of the front baffle also contributes to providing an acoustic platform that is as stable and torsion-resistant as possible.
Inside, the cabinet of the EPICON VOKAL offers two identical chambers for the two woofers. Each of the two bass drivers thus has its own identical, yet completely independent volume. Thanks to its own enclosed cabinet, the mid-range driver is able to reproduce the most critical mid-frequencies, which lie in the range of the human voice, without disturbing influences from the other drivers.
On the back of the cabinet, one finds the two corresponding bass reflex ports in close proximity to the woofers. The reflex tubes are flared at both ends to avoid disruptive turbulence. On the bottom of the cabinet, the hardwired crossover is also fixed in its own housing – and is thus not exposed to dynamic changes in air pressure within the bass reflex cabinet chambers.
The division of the cabinet into several separate, completely isolated volumes contributes just as much to the unique sound experience of the EPICON VOKAL as the carefully positioned cabinet bracing or the consideration of the DALI principle of ensuring optimal timing and unobstructed airflow in every respect.
The cabinet surface consists of real wood veneer, which is lacquered a total of ten times. Between work steps, each individual layer is hand-polished to realize a deep, high-gloss, and elegant surface. A ten-layer lacquer finish with a thickness of around 2 mm also ensures a particularly durable finish. Cutting out the openings for drivers, reflex ports, and connection terminals takes place after the lacquering process to ensure a precise fit during assembly.
