The OPTICON 1 MK2 is a compact loudspeaker designed to be placed near a wall or even mounted directly onto one. The woofer features a 120 mm (4 3⁄4'') wood fiber cone and a motor system equipped with SMC magnets. The newly developed soft dome tweeter has a diameter of 29 mm and is based on the tweeter from our CALLISTO loudspeaker series. The dual-flare bass reflex port, which is flared on both ends, allows the 5-liter cabinet of the OPTICON 1 MK2 to achieve remarkable bass reproduction for its size, perfectly balanced with the midrange and treble performance.

The OPTICON 1 MK2 is available in Satin White, Satin Black, and Tobacco Oak finishes and should be placed on a stand, on a shelf, on a sideboard, or directly on the wall. Included in the scope of delivery is an easy-to-install wall bracket that fits the keyhole slot on the rear of the cabinet.

BASS REFLEX SYSTEM

The OPTICON 1 MK2 features a bass reflex system using the special Dual Flare reflex port, which is shaped like a funnel at both ends. Similar to a water jet that should not be disturbed by bubbling or splashing, this prevents turbulence and allows the sound to exit at an optimal air flow velocity while maintaining proper port diameter and tuning frequency, resulting in minimal distortion and port noise. The result is significantly more powerful and exceptionally clean bass reproduction.

Bass reflex systems use the rear-radiated acoustic energy of the woofers to increase efficiency and volume in the bass range. For this purpose, the cabinet has additional openings with inward-facing reflex tubes precisely tuned to its resonant frequency. This arrangement reverses the phase of the rear-radiated woofer signals so that they add to the sound emitted from the front. For this system to function, reflex openings and tubes must be precisely tuned to the respective driver and cabinet; otherwise, individual frequency ranges could be unnaturally emphasized or the impulse response could deteriorate.

SMC MAGNET SYSTEM

DALI SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) is a coated magnetic granulate that can be formed into almost any shape, offering numerous advantages when used in loudspeaker magnet systems. SMC is characterized by an unusual combination of very high magnetic permeability and very low electrical conductivity. These are exactly the desired properties for the magnets in our loudspeakers. They reduce electroacoustic distortion to a considerable degree.

By using SMC, eddy currents in the pole piece of the magnet system, which are caused by the movement of the voice coil around the pole piece, are reduced. They generate a secondary magnetic field that modulates the input signal and leads to increased harmonic distortion. Furthermore, SMC improves flux linearity within the magnet system, reduces magnetic hysteresis, and minimizes voice coil inductance fluctuations depending on its position. In summary, the aforementioned benefits of SMC lead to a significant reduction in coloration and distortion, especially at low listening levels.

SOFT DOME TWEETER

The 29 mm soft dome is a new development based on the tweeter of the CALLISTO series. The slightly larger diameter leads to a significant increase in the radiating membrane area, which is associated with lower distortion, higher power handling, and an extended low-frequency range. The use of an identical soft dome tweeter in all six OPTICON MK2 models not only leads to a consistent sound character – it also allows for a similar crossover topology across all models, resulting in uniform dispersion.

The new OPTICON MK2 soft dome allows the crossover frequency to be lowered to 2 kHz without fear of distortion or limitations in power handling. An extremely low-viscosity magnetic fluid ensures high resonance damping and higher power handling without impairing the impulse response speed of the particularly light, coated membrane.

WOOFER

The OPTICON 1 MK2 uses a 120 mm (4 3/4") woofer, which features DALI's patented SMC magnet system and the reddish-shimmering wood fiber cone. This consists of a mixture of paper and wood fibers, which ensures minimal cone resonance and gives the membranes their unmistakable DALI trademark color. A particularly flexible rubber surround allows for free cone movement with minimal bass damping.

The extremely rigid and low-resonance driver basket is manufactured from die-cast aluminum. It is designed so that it in no way hinders the airflow inside the cabinet while simultaneously ensuring an extremely firm mechanical connection to the loudspeaker cabinet.

The magnet system of the OPTICON 1 MK2 consists of a large ferrite ring magnet surrounding a pole piece made entirely of the unique DALI SMC material. The pole piece and the ferrite magnet are secured between front and back plates of soft iron to generate the appropriate magnetic field for the voice coil.

CABINET

Every OPTICON MK2 cabinet has been optimized for maximum rigidity and minimal surface resonance. The 25 mm thick baffle of the OPTICON 1 MK2 provides the drivers mounted within it with optimal, unshakeable working conditions.

The loudspeakers of the OPTICON MK2 series are manufactured at DALI in Denmark. Our in-house woodworking facility covers all aspects of production; from cutting and milling the MDF cabinet parts to surface finishing and cabinet assembly. The installation of the drivers and crossovers as well as the final quality inspection and approval for every single loudspeaker are also carried out on our own production lines.
