The OPTICON 2 MK2 is a medium-sized bookshelf speaker. With its 165 mm (6 1/2'') wood fiber woofer, SMC magnet system, and 10-liter cabinet, it is capable of more powerful bass performance than its smaller sibling. Like the OPTICON 1 MK2, it utilizes the 29 mm tweeter inherited from the CALLISTO series. The OPTICON 2 MK2 is the perfect choice for small to medium-sized rooms where a high-quality compact speaker can fully showcase its dynamics and playback quality.

The OPTICON 2 MK2 is available in satin white, satin black, and tobacco oak finishes and should be placed on a stand, on a shelf, or on a sideboard.

BASS REFLEX SYSTEM

The OPTICON 2 MK2 features a bass reflex system with a special Dual Flare reflex port, which is shaped like a funnel at both ends. Similar to a water jet that should not be disturbed by bubbling or splashing, this design avoids turbulence and allows sound to exit with optimal airflow velocity, minimal distortion, and reduced port noise, taking into account the port diameter and tuning frequency. The result is significantly more powerful and exceptionally clean bass reproduction.

Bass reflex systems utilize the rear-radiated acoustic energy of the woofers to increase efficiency and output in the bass range. To achieve this, the cabinet has additional openings with inward-facing reflex ports tuned precisely to its resonance frequency. This configuration inverts the phase of the rear-radiated woofer signals so that they add to the frontal sound output. For this system to function, reflex openings and ports must be precisely matched to the respective driver and cabinet; otherwise, certain frequency ranges can be unnaturally emphasized or transient response can deteriorate.

SMC MAGNET SYSTEM

DALI SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) is a coated magnetic granule that can be formed into almost any shape and offers numerous advantages when used in speaker magnet systems. SMC is characterized by an unusual combination of very high magnetic permeability and very low electrical conductivity. These are precisely the desired properties for our speaker magnets, as they significantly reduce electroacoustic distortion.

Using SMC reduces eddy currents in the pole piece of the magnet system caused by the movement of the voice coil around the pole piece. These currents generate a secondary magnetic field that modulates the input signal and leads to increased harmonic distortion. Furthermore, SMC improves flux linearity within the magnet system, reduces magnetic hysteresis, and minimizes voice coil inductance fluctuations dependent on its position. Overall, the advantages of SMC lead to a significant reduction in coloration and interference, especially at low listening levels.

SOFT DOME TWEETER

The 29 mm soft dome is a new development based on the tweeter from the CALLISTO series. The slightly larger diameter results in a significant increase in the radiating membrane area, which is accompanied by lower distortion, higher power handling, and an extended lower frequency range. The use of an identical tweeter in all six OPTICON MK2 models not only creates a consistent sound character but also enables a similar crossover topology across all models, resulting in uniform dispersion.

The new OPTICON MK2 soft dome allows the crossover frequency to be lowered to 2 kHz without fear of distortion or limitations in power handling. An extremely low-viscosity magnetic fluid ensures high resonance damping and increased power handling without impairing the impulse response speed of the lightweight, coated membrane.

WOOFER

The OPTICON 2 MK2 features a 165 mm (6 1/2") woofer equipped with DALI's patented SMC magnet system and the reddish-hued wood fiber membrane. This consists of a mixture of paper and wood fibers, which ensures minimal breakup resonances and gives the membranes their distinctive DALI signature color. A highly flexible rubber surround allows for free membrane movement with minimal low-frequency damping.

The driver's extremely stiff and low-resonance basket is made of die-cast aluminum. It is designed so that it does not hinder airflow within the cabinet in any way, while simultaneously ensuring an extremely solid mechanical connection to the speaker cabinet.

The magnet system of the OPTICON 2 MK2 consists of a large ferrite ring magnet surrounding a pole piece made entirely of the unique DALI SMC material. The pole piece and the ferrite magnet are fastened between front and back plates of soft iron to generate the appropriate magnetic field for the voice coil.

CABINET

Each OPTICON MK2 cabinet has been optimized for maximum rigidity and minimal panel resonance. The 25 mm thick front baffle of the OPTICON 2 MK2 provides the mounted drivers with optimal, rock-solid working conditions.

The speakers in the OPTICON MK2 series are manufactured by DALI in Denmark. Our in-house woodworking facility covers all aspects of production, from cutting and milling the MDF cabinet parts to surface finishing and cabinet assembly. The installation of the drivers and crossovers, as well as the final quality inspection and approval for every single speaker, are also carried out on our own production lines.
