Product description
The most striking feature of the slender OPTICON 6 MK2 floorstanding speaker is DALI's hybrid tweeter, which is featured in all high-end series. This combination of a dome and a ribbon tweeter has been further improved for the new series, reproducing high frequencies with significantly more detail. The 29 mm dome, adopted from the CALLISTO series, is integrated here along with the 17 × 45 mm ribbon element into a matte black die-cast aluminum faceplate. In the OPTICON 6 MK2, bass and midrange are handled by two 165 mm (6 ½'') wood-fiber cones with an SMC magnet system. The lower of these two drivers covers only a portion of the midrange.
The OPTICON 6 MK2 can be connected via bi-wiring if required, allowing the woofer/midrange driver and high-frequency module to be driven independently via two speaker cables. With its two woofer/midrange drivers, the Dual Flare bass reflex ports, and the larger internal volume of a floorstanding speaker, the OPTICON 6 MK2 performs significantly more powerfully in the bass range than the series' bookshelf speakers. This more robust bass combines with the brilliant clarity in the mids and the typical sparkling highs of the DALI hybrid tweeter to create a compelling whole.
The OPTICON 6 MK2 comes with die-cast aluminum base traverses. These are supplemented by either black chrome-plated spikes or (if placement on delicate floors is planned) vibration-reducing damping pads. Tools for mounting the traverses and spikes are included.
BASS REFLEX SYSTEM
The OPTICON 6 MK2 features a bass reflex system with special Dual Flare reflex ports, which are shaped like a funnel at both ends. Similar to a water jet that should not be disturbed by bubbling or splashing, this design avoids turbulence and allows the sound to exit at an optimal airflow velocity with minimal distortion and flow noise, taking into account the port diameter and tuning frequency. The result is a significantly more powerful and exceptionally clean bass reproduction.
Bass reflex systems utilize the acoustic energy radiated from the back of the woofers to increase efficiency and volume in the bass range. For this purpose, the cabinet has additional openings with inward-facing reflex ports precisely tuned to its resonance frequency. This arrangement reverses the phase of the rear-radiated woofer signals so that they add to the sound emitted from the front. For this system to work, reflex ports and tubes must be precisely matched to the respective driver and cabinet; otherwise, individual frequency ranges can be unnaturally emphasized or impulse response can deteriorate.
SMC MAGNET SYSTEM
DALI SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) is a coated magnetic granule that can be molded into almost any desired shape and offers numerous advantages when used in speaker magnet systems. SMC is characterized by an unusual combination of very high magnetic permeability and very low electrical conductivity. These are precisely the desired properties for the magnets in our speakers. They reduce electro-acoustic distortion to a considerable degree.
By using SMC, eddy currents in the pole piece of the magnet system caused by the voice coil's movement around the pole piece are reduced. They generate a secondary magnetic field that modulates the input signal and leads to increased harmonic distortion. Furthermore, SMC also improves flux linearity within the magnet system, reduces magnetic hysteresis, and minimizes voice coil inductance fluctuations depending on its position. In total, the stated benefits of SMC lead to a significant reduction in coloration and interference, especially at low listening levels.
SOFT DOME TWEETER
The 29 mm soft dome is a new development based on the tweeter of the CALLISTO series. The slightly larger diameter results in a significant increase in the sound-emitting diaphragm area, which is accompanied by lower distortion, higher power handling, and a frequency range extended downwards. Using an identical tweeter dome in all six OPTICON MK2 models not only leads to a consistent sound character – it also enables a similar crossover topology across all models, resulting in uniform dispersion.
The new OPTICON MK2 soft dome allows the crossover frequency to be lowered to 2 kHz without fearing distortion or limitations in power handling. An extremely thin magnetic fluid provides high resonance damping and higher power handling without impairing the impulse response speed of the particularly lightweight, coated diaphragm.
HYBRID TWEETER
The redesigned hybrid tweeter of the OPTICON MK2 series combines a 29 mm soft dome adapted from the CALLISTO speaker series with a newly developed 17 × 45 mm ribbon. Both tweeters are mounted on a die-cast aluminum plate, which also ensures optimal horizontal dispersion.
The hybrid tweeter is tuned so that the ribbon radiates all frequencies above 14 kHz – below that, the soft dome takes over the musical action. The ribbon extends the frequency response of the entire system up to 30 kHz and simultaneously improves horizontal dispersion at the highest frequencies in a way that would otherwise not be possible. The new hybrid tweeter combines the best of both worlds: the clarity, speed, and dynamics of a dome and the detail and finesse of a ribbon tweeter.
WOOFER/MIDRANGE DRIVER
The OPTICON 6 MK2 uses two 165 mm (6 1/2") woofer/midrange drivers, both of which feature DALI's patented SMC magnet system and the reddish-shimmering wood-fiber cones. They consist of a mixture of paper and wood fibers, which ensures minimal breakup resonances and gives the cones their unmistakable DALI trademark color. Especially flexible rubber surrounds allow for free diaphragm movement with minimal low-frequency damping.
The extremely stiff and low-resonance baskets of the drivers are made of die-cast aluminum. They are designed so that they do not hinder the airflow within the cabinet in any way while ensuring an extremely solid mechanical connection with the speaker cabinets.
The OPTICON 6 MK2 driver magnet system consists of a large ferrite ring magnet surrounding a pole piece made entirely of the unique DALI SMC material. The pole piece and the ferrite magnet are secured between front and back plates made of soft iron to generate the appropriate magnetic field for the voice coil.
CABINET
Every OPTICON MK2 cabinet has been optimized for maximum rigidity and minimal surface resonance. The 25 mm thick baffle of the OPTICON 6 MK2 provides the drivers mounted within it with optimal, unshakeable working conditions. The floorstanding speaker also has additional internal bracing to increase stiffness and virtually eliminate cabinet resonances.
The OPTICON 6 MK2 is supplied with two die-cast aluminum base traverses that are screwed under the cabinet and give the speakers a secure stand. The traverses are fitted with either spikes or – when placed on delicate floors – vibration-damping rubber pads. Tools for attaching the traverses and spikes are included.
The speakers of the OPTICON MK2 series are manufactured by DALI in Denmark. Our in-house woodworking facility covers all aspects of production; from cutting and milling the MDF cabinet parts to surface finishing and cabinet assembly. The installation of the drivers and crossovers as well as the final quality inspection and approval for every single speaker are also carried out on our own production lines.
