Product description

The large OPTICON 8 MK2 floorstanding speaker is the unmissable flagship of the new series and its only three-way system. It is equipped with two 200 mm (8'') woofers featuring SMC magnet systems and wood fiber cones, as well as a 165 mm (6 ½'') midrange driver, also with an SMC magnet system and a wood fiber cone. If required, the OPTICON 8 MK2 can be connected via bi-wiring using two separate speaker cables for the woofers and midrange/tweeter modules. The midrange driver and hybrid tweeter are positioned in the baffle between the two widely spaced woofers so that high and mid frequencies are radiated at the ear level of seated listeners. Furthermore, the greater distance between the woofers improves bass reproduction. Located above the OPTICON 8 MK2's midrange driver is the DALI hybrid tweeter, featuring the new 29 mm soft dome inherited from the CALLISTO series and a 17 x 45 mm ribbon.

The interior of the OPTICON 8 MK2 is divided into separate cabinet chambers by non-parallel partitions so that the individual drivers can operate independently of one another and disturbing resonances are minimized. At the same time, the rigidity of the cabinet is significantly improved. Each woofer is also assigned its own Dual Flare bass reflex port. Thanks to its size and the three-way system, the OPTICON 8 MK2 offers a reproduction quality that is unsurpassed by any other OPTICON model. It combines a powerful bass foundation, ample reserves even for high playback levels, and dynamic precision with the extraordinary richness of detail that results from the use of a dedicated midrange driver. The hybrid tweeter, in turn, delights with a detailed and three-dimensional, yet simultaneously smooth and pleasing sound.

The OPTICON 8 MK2 comes with cast aluminum base cross-pieces. These are supplemented with either black chrome spikes or (if placement on delicate floors is planned) vibration-reducing damping pads. Tools for mounting the cross-pieces and spikes are included.

BASS REFLEX SYSTEM

The OPTICON 8 MK2 features a bass reflex system with special Dual Flare reflex ports, which are shaped like a funnel at both ends. Similar to a water jet that should not be disturbed by bubbling or splashing, this avoids turbulence and ensures that the sound is output at an optimal air flow velocity, taking into account the port diameter and tuning frequency, with minimal distortion and port noise. The result is a significantly more powerful and exceptionally clean bass reproduction.

Bass reflex systems use the rear-radiated acoustic energy of the woofers to increase efficiency and volume in the bass range. For this purpose, the cabinet has additional openings with inward-facing reflex ports, precisely tuned to its resonance frequency. With this arrangement, the phase of the rear-radiated woofer signals is inverted so that they add to the sound emitted from the front. For this system to function, reflex openings and ports must be precisely tuned to the respective driver and cabinet; otherwise, individual frequency ranges can be unnaturally emphasized or impulse response can deteriorate.

SMC MAGNET SYSTEM

DALI SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) is a coated magnetic granule that can be formed into almost any desired shape and offers numerous advantages when used in loudspeaker magnet systems. SMC is characterized by an unusual combination of very high magnetic permeability and very low electrical conductivity. These are precisely the desired properties for the magnets in our speakers. They reduce electroacoustic distortion to a considerable extent.

The use of SMC reduces eddy currents in the pole piece of the magnet system, which are caused by the movement of the voice coil around the pole piece. They generate a secondary magnetic field that modulates the input signal and leads to increased harmonic distortion. Furthermore, SMC also improves flux linearity within the magnet system, reduces magnetic hysteresis, and minimizes inductance fluctuations of the voice coil depending on its position. In sum, the aforementioned benefits of SMC lead to a clear reduction in coloration and interference, especially at low listening levels.

SOFT DOME TWEETER
The 29 mm soft dome is a new development based on the tweeter of the CALLISTO series. The slightly larger diameter leads to a significant increase in the radiating membrane area, which is accompanied by lower distortion, higher power handling, and a frequency range extended downward. The use of an identical tweeter dome in all six OPTICON MK2 models not only leads to a consistent sound character – it also enables a crossover topology that is similar across all models, resulting in uniform dispersion.

The new OPTICON MK2 soft dome makes it possible to lower the crossover frequency to 2 kHz without fear of distortion or limitations in power handling. An extremely low-viscosity magnetic fluid ensures high resonance damping and higher power handling without impairing the impulse response speed of the particularly light, coated membrane.

HYBRID TWEETER
The newly designed hybrid tweeter of the OPTICON MK2 series combines a 29 mm soft dome adapted from the CALLISTO speaker series with a newly developed 17 × 45 mm ribbon. Both tweeters are mounted on a cast aluminum plate, which also ensures optimal horizontal dispersion.

The hybrid tweeter is tuned so that the ribbon radiates all frequencies above 14 kHz – below this, the soft dome takes over the musical action. The ribbon extends the frequency response of the entire system up to 30 kHz and at the same time improves horizontal dispersion at the highest frequencies in a way that would otherwise not be achievable. The new hybrid tweeter combines the best of both worlds: the clarity, speed, and dynamics of a dome tweeter and the detail and finesse of a ribbon tweeter.

MIDRANGE AND WOOFERS

The OPTICON 8 MK2 works with two 200 mm (8") woofers and one 165 mm (6 ½") midrange driver. Both feature DALI's patented SMC magnet system and the reddish-shimmering wood fiber cones. These consist of a mixture of paper and wood fibers, which ensures minimal break-up resonances and gives the cones their distinctive DALI trademark color. Especially flexible rubber surrounds allow for free membrane movement with minimal low-frequency damping.

The extremely rigid and low-resonance baskets of the drivers are manufactured from die-cast aluminum. They are designed so that, on the one hand, they do not hinder the airflow inside the cabinet in any way, while at the same time ensuring an extremely solid mechanical connection with the speaker cabinets.

The OPTICON 8 MK2 driver magnet system consists of a large ferrite ring magnet that surrounds a pole piece made entirely of the unique DALI SMC material. The pole piece and the ferrite magnet are fastened between front and back plates made of soft iron to generate the appropriate magnetic field for the voice coil.

CABINET

Every OPTICON MK2 cabinet has been optimized for maximum rigidity and minimal surface resonance. The 25 mm thick baffle of the OPTICON 8 MK2 offers the drivers mounted within it optimal, unshakable working conditions. The floorstanding speaker also has additional internal bracing to increase rigidity and virtually eliminate cabinet resonances.

The OPTICON 8 MK2 is supplied with two cast aluminum base cross-pieces that are screwed under the cabinet and give the speakers a secure footing. The cross-pieces are fitted with either spikes or – when placed on delicate floors – vibration-damping rubber pads. Tools for fastening the cross-pieces and spikes are included.

The speakers of the OPTICON MK2 series are manufactured by DALI in Denmark. Our in-house woodworking facility covers all aspects of production, from cutting and milling the MDF cabinet parts to surface finishing and cabinet assembly. The installation of the drivers and crossovers, as well as the final quality control and approval for every individual speaker, are also carried out on our own production lines.
