The OPTICON LCR MK2 features a particularly shallow enclosure optimized for wall mounting and is suitable for a wide range of applications. In a home cinema system, the speaker can be used at the front for the left, right, and center channels, as well as at the rear for surround channels. Furthermore, the OPTICON LCR MK2 cuts a fine figure as a conventional stereo speaker or as an addition to a TV set.

The woofer/midrange driver, with its 165 mm (6 1⁄2'') wood fiber cone and an SMC pole piece, the rotatable hybrid tweeter module, and the sophisticated bass reflex system that incorporates the wall, combine to form a perfectly matched ensemble that delivers far more than one would expect from such a compact speaker. With airy highs, expressive mids, and surprisingly deep-reaching bass, the OPTICON LCR MK2 is a wall-mounted speaker with full-fledged HiFi sound characteristics.

SMC MAGNET SYSTEM

DALI SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) is a coated magnetic granule that can be molded into almost any desired shape and offers numerous advantages when used in speaker magnet systems. SMC is characterized by a very unusual combination of very high magnetic permeability and very low electrical conductivity. These are precisely the desired properties for the magnets in our speakers. They reduce electro-acoustic distortion to a considerable degree.

Through the use of SMC, eddy currents in the pole piece of the magnet system—caused by the movement of the voice coil around the pole piece—are reduced. These generate a secondary magnetic field that modulates the input signal and leads to increased harmonic distortion. Furthermore, SMC improves the flux linearity within the magnet system, reduces magnetic hysteresis, and minimizes inductance fluctuations of the voice coil depending on its position. In sum, the aforementioned benefits of SMC lead to a significant reduction in coloration and interference, especially at low listening levels.

SOFT DOME TWEETER
The 29 mm soft dome tweeter is a new development based on the tweeter from the CALLISTO series. The slightly larger diameter leads to a significant increase in the radiating membrane area, which is accompanied by lower distortion, higher power handling, and an extended frequency range towards the lower end. The use of an identical tweeter dome in all six OPTICON MK2 models not only leads to a consistent sound character—it also enables a crossover topology that is similar across all models, resulting in uniform dispersion behavior.

The new OPTICON MK2 soft dome tweeter allows the crossover frequency to be lowered to 2 kHz without fear of distortion or limitations in power handling. An extremely low-viscosity magnetic fluid ensures high resonance damping and higher power handling without impairing the transient response speed of the particularly light, coated membrane.

HYBRID TWEETER

The newly designed hybrid tweeter of the OPTICON MK2 series combines a 29 mm soft dome tweeter adapted from the CALLISTO speaker series with a newly developed 17 × 45 mm ribbon. Both tweeters are mounted on a cast aluminum plate, which at the same time ensures optimal horizontal dispersion.

The hybrid tweeter is tuned so that the ribbon radiates all frequencies above 14 kHz—below that, the soft dome tweeter enters the musical action. The ribbon extends the frequency response of the overall system up to 30 kHz and simultaneously improves horizontal dispersion at the highest frequencies in a way that would otherwise not be achievable. The new hybrid tweeter combines the best of both worlds: the clarity, speed, and dynamics of a dome tweeter and the detail and finesse of a ribbon tweeter.

WOOFER/MIDRANGE DRIVER

The OPTICON LCR MK2 works with a 165 mm (6 1/2") woofer/midrange driver that features DALI's patented SMC magnet system and the reddish-shimmering wood fiber cone. This consists of a mixture of paper and wood fibers, which ensures minimal break-up resonances and gives the cones their distinctive DALI trademark color. A particularly flexible rubber surround allows free cone movement with minimal bass damping.

The driver's extremely rigid and low-resonance basket is manufactured from die-cast aluminum. It is designed such that, on the one hand, it does not obstruct the airflow within the enclosure in any way, while at the same time ensuring an extremely solid mechanical connection to the speaker cabinet.

The magnet system of the OPTICON LCR MK2 consists of a large ferrite ring magnet that surrounds a pole piece made entirely of the unique DALI SMC material. The pole piece and the ferrite magnet are secured between soft iron front and back plates to generate the appropriate magnetic field for the voice coil.

CABINET

Each OPTICON MK2 cabinet has been optimized for maximum rigidity and minimal surface resonance. The 25 mm thick front baffle of the OPTICON LCR MK2 offers the drivers mounted within it optimal, unshakeable working conditions.

The speakers of the OPTICON MK2 series are manufactured by DALI in Denmark. Our in-house woodworking facility covers all aspects of production; from cutting and milling the MDF cabinet parts to surface finishing and cabinet assembly. The installation of the drivers and crossovers as well as the final quality inspection and approval for every single speaker are also carried out on our own production lines.

The reflex ports of the wall-mounted speaker are not designed with Dual Flare tubes, but are no less carefully thought out. The placement directly on the wall requires a completely different approach. Thus, although the reflex ports are located in the rear panel, they are designed in such a way that they do not radiate against the wall, but along the wall. In this way, the surface of the wall becomes an integral part of the bass reflex system.
