The OPTICON VOKAL MK2 has been consistently developed as a center speaker for home cinema systems. Its driver configuration, featuring a 165 mm (6 1/2'') woofer/midrange driver and the DALI hybrid tweeter, guarantees not only highly intelligible voice reproduction but also a harmonious integration of the center channel into the overall soundstage of the system. The cabinet dimensions and proportions of the OPTICON VOKAL MK2 are designed for easy integration of the landscape-format speaker into A/V furniture – thanks to the front-firing bass reflex ports, it can even be placed in shelves or lowboards that are closed at the back.

SMC MAGNET SYSTEM

DALI SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) is a coated magnetic granulate that can be shaped into almost any form and offers numerous advantages when used in speaker magnet systems. SMC is characterized by an unusual combination of very high magnetic permeability and very low electrical conductivity. These are precisely the properties desired for the magnets in our speakers. They significantly reduce electro-acoustic distortion.

Using SMC reduces eddy currents in the magnet system’s pole piece, which are caused by the movement of the voice coil around the pole piece. They generate a secondary magnetic field that modulates the input signal and leads to increased harmonic distortion. Furthermore, SMC improves flux linearity within the magnet system, reduces magnetic hysteresis, and minimizes voice coil inductance fluctuations depending on its position. In summary, these advantages of SMC lead to a significant reduction in coloration and interference, especially at low listening levels.

SOFT DOME TWEETER

The 29 mm soft dome tweeter is a new development based on the tweeter from the CALLISTO series. The slightly larger diameter leads to a significant increase in the radiating membrane surface area, which is accompanied by lower distortion, higher power handling, and an extended frequency range at the lower end. The use of an identical tweeter dome in all six OPTICON MK2 models not only creates a consistent sound character – it also enables a similar crossover topology across all models, resulting in uniform dispersion.

The new OPTICON MK2 soft dome tweeter allows the crossover frequency to be lowered to 2 kHz without fear of distortion or limitations in power handling. An extremely low-viscosity magnetic fluid ensures high resonance damping and higher power handling without impairing the impulse response speed of the ultra-light, coated diaphragm.

HYBRID TWEETER

The newly designed hybrid tweeter of the OPTICON MK2 series combines a 29 mm soft dome tweeter adapted from the CALLISTO speaker series with a newly developed 17 × 45 mm ribbon tweeter. Both tweeters are mounted on a cast aluminum plate, which also ensures optimal horizontal dispersion.

The hybrid tweeter is tuned so that the ribbon tweeter radiates all frequencies above 14 kHz – below this, the soft dome tweeter takes over the musical action. The ribbon extends the frequency response of the overall system up to 30 kHz while simultaneously improving horizontal dispersion at the highest frequencies in a way that would otherwise be impossible. The new hybrid tweeter combines the best of both worlds: the clarity, speed, and dynamics of a dome tweeter and the detail and finesse of a ribbon tweeter.

WOOFER/MIDRANGE DRIVER

The OPTICON VOKAL MK2 uses a 165 mm (6 1/2") woofer/midrange driver featuring DALI's patented SMC magnet system and the reddish-shimmering wood fiber cone. This consists of a mixture of paper and wood fibers, which ensures minimal break-up resonances and gives the diaphragms their distinctive DALI trademark color. A particularly flexible rubber surround allows for free diaphragm movement with minimal low-frequency damping.

The driver's extremely rigid and low-resonance basket is made of die-cast aluminum. It is designed to ensure that it in no way obstructs airflow within the cabinet while at the same time ensuring an extremely solid mechanical connection to the speaker cabinet.

The magnet system of the OPTICON VOKAL MK2 consists of a large ferrite ring magnet surrounding a pole piece made entirely of the unique DALI SMC material. The pole piece and the ferrite magnet are secured between front and back plates of soft iron to generate the appropriate magnetic field for the voice coil.

CABINET

Every OPTICON MK2 cabinet has been optimized for maximum rigidity and minimal surface resonance. The 25 mm thick baffle of the OPTICON VOKAL MK2 provides the drivers mounted within it with optimal, rock-solid working conditions.

The speakers of the OPTICON MK2 series are manufactured by DALI in Denmark. Our in-house woodworking facility covers all aspects of production; from cutting and milling the MDF cabinet parts to surface finishing and cabinet assembly. The installation of the drivers and crossovers, as well as the final quality inspection and approval for every individual speaker, are also carried out on our own production lines.

The reflex ports of the center speaker are not designed with Dual Flare tubes, but they are no less carefully thought out. The OPTICON VOKAL MK2 features two front-facing slot-shaped reflex ports, allowing the center speaker to be placed easily on a shelf directly against the wall or in a closed shelf compartment.
