Product description

The elegant RUBICON 2 C bookshelf speaker represents our approach to bridging the two worlds of high-quality music reproduction and digital audio streaming. The RUBICON 2 C is part of a wireless speaker system that allows access to digitally stored music data and online streaming services in the best possible quality, enabling music playback without the need for complex and space-consuming Hi-Fi components.

Thanks to its 165 mm woofer/midrange driver, the RUBICON 2 C is capable of delivering powerful and deep bass reproduction in small to medium-sized living spaces. The sound quality is at least equal to that of the original passive RUBICON models. Their speaker drivers and cabinet constructions are used here unchanged – complemented by the amplifier technology from the CALLISTO series and wireless audio transmission via the DALI Sound Hub.

The RUBICON 2 C is available in three cabinet finishes: high-gloss white, high-gloss black, and satin walnut. It comes complete with rubber feet to ensure the speaker stands securely, excelling both aesthetically and acoustically.

CABINET

Cabinets made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) form the solid base for operating the drivers, which are bolted directly to the 25 mm thick baffle. To optimally secure and integrate the woofer into the cabinet, the five screws are positioned exactly at the extensions of the speaker basket ribs. The tweeter is also securely mounted to eliminate disruptive vibrations and resonances.

The cabinet volume has been precisely tuned to the characteristics of the woofer/midrange driver and the frequency range it handles. The bass reflex port is located on the back of the cabinet in close proximity to the woofer, which minimizes turbulence and optimizes the transit time between the woofer and the reflex port. Multiple internal braces also prevent unwanted cabinet resonances and sound coloration.

AMPLIFIER

The development of a high-quality active speaker system involves numerous aspects. A truly important part is the amplifier, or more precisely, the amplifier module.

Instead of using an analog crossover like the passive RUBICON 2, the individual drivers of the active RUBICON 2 C are driven directly via a digital sound processor and the two amplifiers integrated into each speaker. This allows the developers to optimally match the DSP, amplifiers, and drivers, resulting in particularly detailed playback.

One of the two 250-watt amplifiers is reserved for the 165 mm wood-fiber woofer/midrange driver. The combination of a particularly low-loss design, wood-fiber cone, and SMC pole piece allows these woofers to exhibit only minimal distortion. Together with the highly musical Class D amplifier, this guarantees extremely detailed and dynamic performance.

The Class D amplifiers are based on the latest patented technologies; they are self-oscillating and use global feedback, chosen for its musical character. To adequately reproduce complex musical passages or intense explosions in movies, 250 watts of power are available for impulses lasting up to five seconds.

WOOFER

Since the SMC magnet system developed by DALI produces virtually no disruptive distortion, the other components must also feature equally high quality. The extremely lightweight yet highly rigid wood-fiber cone diaphragms with their intentionally uneven surface structure come from the same company that produces the EPICON diaphragms. The cone can move like a piston very easily, and potential surface resonances are kept to a minimum. In summary, these measures ensure very detailed and virtually coloration-free music playback, even at low volumes.

The cone is surrounded by a soft, low-loss rubber surround, which was developed from scratch and tailor-made for the RUBICON C drivers. The surround ensures that the cone can move easily and without energy loss.

All components are fixed in an aluminum basket that allows for maximum air movement around the cone and magnet system. The use of a non-electrically conductive aluminum basket further ensures that the magnetic field around the magnet motor is not affected.

The use of SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) in the woofer/midrange drivers of the RUBICON 2 C brings many advantages, the most significant being the clear reduction of distortion caused by mechanical losses in the magnet motor. The unique ability of SMC to combine high magnetic conductivity with very low electrical conductivity enables the use of a truly high-quality speaker magnet without the disadvantages of conventional designs.

The "secret" consists of powdered, individually coated magnetic granules that make it possible to form a strong, non-conductive magnet. The conductivity is only about 1/10,000th that of iron. With SMC, a speaker driver operates almost free of hysteresis and thus virtually without distortion.

SOFT DOME TWEETER

A 29 mm fabric dome is used in the RUBICON 2 C. Its extremely lightweight diaphragm has a significantly higher cutoff frequency than the domes of the DALI hybrid tweeter module previously had. This design was necessary for the dome in the RUBICON 2 C to reproduce all high-frequency signals.

To achieve this greater bandwidth, DALI developed a new, particularly lightweight and agile voice coil. For this, the copper wire traditionally used in voice coils was replaced by copper-clad aluminum. A powerful ferrite magnet provides the drive.

BLUESOUND HUB BLUOS™ NETWORK MODULE

The new Bluesound HUB makes it possible to integrate virtually any analog and digital audio source into the BluOS™ network, regardless of its location in the house or apartment. For example, if a CD player, TV, or analog turntable with a magnetic cartridge is connected via cable to a HUB, this device can be played back via any BluOS™ player, such as Bluesound speakers or NAD streaming amplifiers in the network. That's not all: since each HUB can manage two sources simultaneously (one analog and one digital), and up to four HUBs can be added to a network via the BluOS™ app setup wizard, the BluOS™ ecosystem can be expanded with numerous audio devices located in different rooms. Playback is controlled centrally as usual via the BluOS™ app on a smartphone, tablet, or desktop PC.
