Product description

The SUB E-12 F is the ideal low-frequency partner for entry-level speaker combinations such as the SPEKTOR, OBERON, or OPTICON series. It audibly and tangibly expands the frequency spectrum of your home cinema or stereo system with an extremely deep bass foundation, ensuring dynamic, well-controlled low-frequency reproduction.

The 300-millimeter woofer cone is made of pure aluminum, making it not only extremely rigid but also very stylish. It is powered by a Class D amplifier with 170 W RMS power and an extremely linear frequency response. An integrated limiter also protects the subwoofer from overload. The heavy-duty magnet system, featuring a massive four-layer, long-stroke voice coil, ensures that the SUB E-12 F can always perfectly follow the audio signal coming from the amplifier.

Volume, phase, and the upper crossover frequency can be adjusted on the rear of the SUB E-12 F, and an auto-on/off function guarantees that the amplifier switches on immediately as soon as an audio signal is detected.

Thanks to the down-firing bass reflex port, the relatively compact subwoofer can also be placed directly against a wall without any issues. And because the front grille is held in place by invisible magnets, it is easy to remove to transform the subwoofer's look from discreetly elegant to technically extravagant with the aluminum cone now visible.

DIGITAL AMPLIFIER

The Class D amplifier integrated into the SUB E-12F mobilizes 170 watts of RMS power and was specially designed for this subwoofer with a focus on particularly linear and low-distortion reproduction. It reaches a peak power of 220 watts – an important prerequisite for the most faithful possible reproduction of bass impulses contained in film soundtracks and music recordings.

The power required for this is provided by a generously dimensioned switch-mode power supply. This is also responsible for the subwoofer having an extremely low power consumption of just 0.4 watts in standby mode. While a large portion of the power generated by conventional analog amplifiers is lost as heat, the digital amplifier of the SUB E-12 F has an impressive efficiency of 70%. Despite their high performance, the output stage and power supply therefore generate only an absolute minimum of heat loss, which is why the subwoofer does not require any external heat sinks.

To ensure that the SUB E-12 F sounds optimal under all circumstances, we have integrated a limiter into the amplifier section. This works in two ways: it compares the amplitude of the input signal with the potential output signal, as well as the available supply voltage of the power unit with the expected output signal. If either of these comparisons indicates a problem, the limiter gently reduces the signal level without any perceptible loss in impulse response.

Since the DALI SUB E-12 F is equipped with controls for volume level and crossover frequency (40 – 120 Hz) as well as a phase inversion switch, it can be perfectly adapted to most front speakers and room acoustics. Both line and LFE RCA connections are available for connection to a preamplifier or receiver.

WOOFER

The 300 mm cone of the SUB E-12 F is made of aluminum. Because this material is both very rigid and lightweight, it offers excellent impulse response—something you wouldn't normally expect from a subwoofer in this price range. True to the DALI philosophy of particularly natural reproduction, the transient response is also very good, which enables optimal interplay with the front speakers.

Instead of integrating a separate dust cap in the center of the cone, the diaphragm is made of one piece, which allows its oscillating motion to approach the ideal of a piston. The result: distortions are reduced to an absolute minimum, especially in the lowest frequency ranges that the subwoofer is intended to reproduce.

The woofer drive operates with a generously dimensioned ferrite magnet that provides a powerful magnetic field within the voice coil area. As a result, the frequency response of the SUB E-12 F reaches down to 28 Hertz, and even in the lowest registers, highly detailed reproduction is ensured in conjunction with high sound pressure.

In the interest of minimal signal loss, an extremely flexible surround is used, which allows for large and linear excursions. The generously dimensioned suspension is designed so that both weak and strong audio currents are converted into acoustic signals without distortion.

CABINET

Even after over 30 years of experience in the field of acoustic and cabinet development, DALI continues to trust in the excellent acoustic properties of cabinets made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF). The cabinet of the SUB E-12 F is available in either matte black or matte white. The baffle is also finished in a matching matte color.

Any risk of flow noise from the downward-facing bass reflex port is reduced by its convex, conically tapered design. Apart from its shape, the dimensions and placement of the reflex port have been measured and optimized in extensive tests so that there are no interactions between the cabinet and the woofer.

The entire cabinet is decoupled from the floor with an elegant aluminum base. It almost looks as if the subwoofer is floating above the floor—but the 30 mm gap between the cabinet and the floor is not just for aesthetics; it also eliminates potential turbulence caused by the down-firing bass reflex port.

The front grille is held by invisible magnets, so the subwoofer retains an elegant appearance without distracting indentations for standard mounting pegs even when operated without the cover.
