Product description

At just around 30 centimeters on each side, the DALI SUB E-9 F subwoofer is extremely compact and is highly recommended for expanding numerous stereo and home cinema systems, such as DALI's ZENSOR and FAZON models.

A deep and powerful bass reproduction is guaranteed by the combination of a 230 mm woofer, a bass reflex system precisely tuned to the driver, and the 220-watt digital amplifier integrated into the subwoofer. The woofer's cone is made of pure aluminum, which makes the cone not only extremely rigid and lightweight but also gives the subwoofer a sophisticated high-tech look. Furthermore, the generously dimensioned rubber surround, the heavy magnet system, and the massive four-layer voice coil allow the cone to perform particularly long-stroke movements – an essential prerequisite for vehement air movement, which is further supported by the down-firing bass reflex port. Ultimately, the comparatively tiny woofer provides a lower cutoff frequency of 37 Hertz and a sound pressure of up to 111 dB.

The integrated digital amplifier also makes a significant contribution to the high quality of the SUB E-9 F. It delivers 170 watts of continuous power and 220 watts of peak power and can be optimally adjusted to the prevailing acoustic conditions using the integrated controls for volume and crossover frequency (adjustment range 40 to 120 Hertz), as well as a phase switch. The DALI sub can be controlled either via the LFE output of a home cinema receiver or via a stereo signal.

The DALI SUB E-9 F is available in two different cabinet finishes: high-quality foil surfaces in black ash and white. The front baffles are finished in high-gloss black or white lacquer and contain hidden magnets, which allow the optional front grilles to be attached. Rounded rubber feet give the subwoofer a secure footing and acoustically decouple it from the floor.

DIGITAL AMPLIFIER

The Class D amplifier integrated into the SUB E-9 F mobilizes an RMS sine power of 170 watts and was specifically designed for this subwoofer with a focus on particularly linear and low-distortion reproduction. It reaches a peak power of 220 watts – an important prerequisite for the most faithful possible reproduction of bass impulses contained in film soundtracks and music recordings.

The power required for this is provided by a large-dimensioned switching power supply. This is also responsible for the subwoofer's extremely low power consumption of only 0.4 watts in standby mode. While a large part of the power generated by conventional analog amplifiers is lost as heat, the digital amplifier of the SUB E-9 F has an impressive efficiency of 70%. Despite its high performance, the power amplifier and switching power supply generate only an absolute minimum of heat loss, which is why the subwoofer does not require any external heat sinks.

To ensure that the SUB E-9 F sounds optimal under all circumstances, we have integrated a limiter in the amplifier section. This works in two ways: it compares the amplitude of the input signal with the potential output signal and the available supply voltage of the power supply with the expected output signal. If one of these comparisons shows a problem, the limiter gently reduces the signal level without any perceptible loss in impulse response.

Since the DALI SUB E-9 F is equipped with controls for volume level and crossover frequency (40 – 120 Hz) as well as a phase switch, it can be perfectly adapted to most front speakers and room acoustics. Both Line and LFE RCA connections are available for connection to a preamplifier or receiver.

WOOFER

The 230 mm cone of the SUB E-9 F is made of aluminum. Since this material is both very stiff and lightweight, it offers excellent impulse response – something one would not normally expect from a subwoofer in this price range. True to the DALI philosophy of particularly natural reproduction, the transient response is also very good, allowing for optimal interaction with the front speakers.

Instead of integrating a separate dust cap in the center of the cone, the cone is made in one piece, which brings its oscillation movement closer to the ideal of a piston. The result: distortions are reduced to an absolute minimum, especially in the lowest frequency ranges that the subwoofer is intended to reproduce.

The woofer drive works with a large-dimensioned ferrite magnet, which provides a powerful magnetic field within the voice coil area. As a result, the frequency response of the SUB E-9 F reaches down to 35 Hertz, and even in the lowest registers, an extremely detailed reproduction combined with high sound pressure is guaranteed.

In the interest of minimizing signal loss, a highly flexible surround is used, which allows for large and linear excursions. The large-dimensioned suspension is designed so that both weak and strong audio currents are converted into acoustic signals without distortion.

CABINET

Even after over 30 years of experience in the field of acoustic and cabinet development, DALI continues to trust the excellent acoustic properties of cabinets made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF). The cabinet of the SUB E-9 F is available in matte black or matte white. The baffle is also finished with a matte surface in a matching color.

Any risk of flow noise through the down-firing bass reflex port is reduced by its convex, conically tapered design. Aside from its shape, the dimensions and placement of the reflex port were measured and optimized in extensive tests so that there are no interactions between the cabinet and the woofer.

The cabinet stands on four plastic spikes, effectively decoupling it from the floor. The 30 mm distance between the cabinet and the floor simultaneously eliminates potential turbulence caused by the down-firing bass reflex opening.

The optional front grille is held in place by invisible magnets, ensuring that the subwoofer retains an elegant appearance without distracting indentations for the usual mounting nipples, even when operated without the grille.
