Whether for room-filling deep bass when listening to music or the sometimes felt rather than heard bass of a movie soundtrack – the DALI SUB K-14 F delivers the perfect low-frequency foundation in any case! Despite its huge 355 mm diameter cone, the impressive bass cube can be easily integrated into the ambiance of modern living rooms, as it is available in either a white or black cabinet with a matching high-gloss baffle.

The long-stroke woofer with an aluminum cone and a digital Class D amplifier with 500 watts of output power give the DALI SUB K-14 F the power required for impressive deep bass reproduction. Connection is made via either the LFE output of the home theater receiver or the stereo outputs of a hi-fi amplifier.

DIGITAL AMPLIFIER

An amplifier with 450 watts of RMS output power ensures a sufficiently dimensioned energy supply. Due to its digital design, almost the entire output is fed to the woofer, which is why sufficient power reserves are always guaranteed even at higher volumes and heavy low-frequency pulses. Since the power supply is also provided via a particularly efficient switch-mode power supply (SMPS), the SUB K-14 F no longer requires any heat sinks.

So that the subwoofer does not throw in the towel due to overheating even during prolonged loud operation, the SUB K-14 F has an overload protection. This ensures that the power amplifier switches off automatically in the event of overheating and switches on again after the amplifier has cooled down to normal operating temperature.

In addition, the subwoofer has a limiter in the analog input stage that switches on automatically at higher volume levels. This ensures that the audio input signal provided by the preamplifier cannot overdrive the Class D power stage, which would manifest as clearly audible distortion (clipping). The limiter constantly compares the incoming audio signal with a reference value. If it detects an input signal that is too high, its level is automatically reduced without you being able to perceive an audible difference in volume.

Since the DALI SUB K-14 F is equipped with controls for volume level and crossover frequency (40 – 120 Hz) as well as a phase switch, it can be perfectly adapted to most front speakers and room acoustics. Both line and LFE RCA connections are available for connection to the preamplifier or receiver.

WOOFER

The 355 mm cone of the SUB K-14 F is made of deep black aluminum. Since this material is both very rigid and yet light, it offers excellent impulse response – as one would not normally expect from a subwoofer in this price range. True to the DALI philosophy of particularly natural reproduction, the transient response is also very good, which enables optimal interaction with the front speakers.

Instead of integrating a separate dust cap in the center of the cone, the cone consists of a single piece, which brings its oscillation movement closer to the ideal of a piston. The result: Distortion is reduced to an absolute minimum, especially in the lowest frequency ranges that the subwoofer is intended to reproduce.

The woofer's drive unit works with a large ferrite magnet that provides a powerful magnetic field within the voice coil area. As a result, the frequency response of the SUB K-14 F reaches down to 29 Hertz, and even in the lowest registers, an extremely detailed reproduction is guaranteed in combination with a high sound pressure.

The 30 mm diameter, four-layer voice coil has been optimized for particularly large excursions. It is ventilated to reliably cool the coil itself and the entire drive unit, and to ensure stable bass reproduction under all circumstances.

The pole piece is also ventilated to ensure it is well-cooled. However, the ventilation here has a different purpose: it reduces internal compression in the drive system to ensure free movement of the cone without annoying overpressure or underpressure.

In the interest of the lowest possible signal loss, an extremely flexible surround is used, which allows for large and linear excursions. The large-dimensioned suspension is designed so that both weak and strong audio currents are converted into acoustic signals without coloration.

CABINET

The SUB K-14 F is undoubtedly a large subwoofer, but thanks to its well-thought-out design, it does not appear obtrusive. The 355 mm cone reaches almost to the edge of the elegant high-gloss baffle, which underscores the effect of a "large chassis in a compact cabinet." The 430 x 395 x 425 mm cabinet is made of solid MDF boards and gives the woofer an working volume of an impressive 44 liters.

The cabinet is available in two finishes: black ash with a black high-gloss baffle or silk matte white with a white high-gloss baffle.

The entire cabinet is decoupled from the floor with an elegant aluminum base. It almost looks as if the subwoofer is floating above the floor – however, the 50 mm gap between the cabinet and the floor not only serves the look, it simultaneously eliminates possible turbulence from the downward-firing bass reflex port.
