The highly sophisticated active subwoofer SUB P-10 DSS from loudspeaker specialist DALI, available in a choice of high-gloss black or white, was not only developed in parallel with the current high-end reference EPICON series, but it also meets the same exacting standards in terms of design and sound quality. The design brief called for a compact bass cube suitable for both high-end hi-fi systems and home cinemas, which the Danish engineers realized to perfection with a side length of just 35 centimeters.

To ensure abyssal and dynamic bass reproduction despite these extremely compact dimensions, the DALI SUB P-10 DSS is bursting with technical features: the integrated digital amplifier drives a downward-firing 250-millimeter woofer, which also sets two identical side-mounted passive radiators into motion via the shared air volume. This design results in a total membrane surface area that is not only gigantic, but also provides excellent technical specifications given the small cabinet dimensions, such as a maximum sound pressure of 112 dB and a lower cutoff frequency of 24 Hertz.

In addition, extensive settings can be adjusted via the included credit-card-sized remote control, and several memory slots are available for directly calling up various sound characteristics.

DIGITAL AMPLIFIER

The integrated amplifier mobilizes a respectable 500 watts of peak power and 300 watts of continuous power, and manages entirely without cooling fins. Thanks to digital Class D amplifier technology, heat loss is kept to a minimum.

The SUB P-10 DSS can be controlled either via a mono LFE input or – if the upstream amplifier or receiver does not have an explicit subwoofer output – a stereo RCA input. Its crossover frequency can be adjusted steplessly between 40 and 120 Hertz on the back of the woofer or via remote control. The phase and volume can be adjusted in the same way. Furthermore, the SUB P-10 DSS has two preset equalizer modes (Music/Movie) that can be switched via remote control, as well as three memory slots for individual settings for mode, phase, crossover frequency, and volume level.

ACTIVE DRIVER

The actively driven 250 mm woofer features a particularly torsion-resistant sandwich structure made of carbon fiber on the front and cellulose on the back. The voice coil of the active driver consists of four layers, is wound on an aluminum support, and has a substantial diameter of 63.5 millimeters. Two centering spiders fixed at a distance of 12 millimeters ensure particularly controlled membrane movement and allow the voice coil to swing reliably like a piston even at large excursions. In addition, a large two-piece ferrite magnet with a vented pole piece ensures reliable operation even at extreme volumes. To ensure that the passive radiators and the active driver work together optimally, they were mechanically and acoustically matched in intensive test series. For example, a zinc alloy proved to be the perfect admixture for the passive membranes so that they follow the movements of the active driver particularly accurately.

PASSIVE RADIATORS

The two side-mounted passive radiators, which are driven exclusively by the movements of the third woofer powered by the amplifier and move air more intensively than a single chassis can, similar to a bass reflex port, also feature a particularly torsion-resistant sandwich structure made of carbon fiber on the front and cellulose on the back. To ensure that the passive radiators and the active driver work together optimally, they were mechanically and acoustically matched in intensive test series. For example, a zinc alloy proved to be the perfect admixture for the passive membranes so that they follow the movements of the active driver particularly accurately.

CABINET

The compact cabinet of the SUB P-10 DSS has been designed in accordance with all the acoustic and mechanical experience and knowledge of our development engineers. It is made of solid medium-density fiberboard (MDF).

To cope with the enormous sound pressure prevailing within the cabinet, which measures only 370 x 340 x 340 mm, the downward-firing active woofer of the DALI SUB P-10 DSS has a baffle made of solid, 25 mm thick plywood.

The subwoofer stands on an elegant aluminum frame, which not only creates enough space for the air set in motion by the active woofer, but also effectively decouples the SUB P-10 DSS from the floor. The height-adjustable metal spikes required for this are included, as are four discs on which the subwoofer can stand stably without the sensitive floor being damaged by the spike tips.

The high-gloss cabinet surface of the P-10 DSS is finished with 10 layers of piano lacquer. Each individual layer is polished by hand after the lacquer is applied, ensuring an extremely refined and elegant appearance.
