Universal Protractor

We have revised and expanded our world-renowned “Universal Protractor.” In addition to increased accuracy, our efforts focused on simplified operation. For the first time, we have now combined the three best-known geometries—Baerwald, Löfgren, and Stevenson—on one template.

The fundamental geometric principles for a scanning device based on a pivoted tonearm were already addressed in publications by Baerwald and Löfgren in the first half of the 20th century. The result of these publications was that the ideal arrangement for a pivoted tonearm of a given length is based on an offset mounted cartridge, which is guided over the record radius with a defined overhang. Thus, the cartridge tracks the record tangentially at exactly two points—the inner and outer zero crossings. In the early 1960s, another mathematician addressed the subject again and presented his findings (Stevenson).
