DOWNSIZING

is a good thing if you do it "right." For us, this means taking the necessary steps to cut costs without making lazy compromises or sacrificing sound quality. Since our large VERO is simply too lavishly equipped and oversized for many customers, we were asked to develop a stripped-down version – we listened!

THE CIRCUITRY

was largely adopted from the large VERO. However, we did have to wield the red pen when it came to power conditioning, as the shunt regulation was not feasible in terms of component cost or cooling requirements – though we did find a way to stay very close to the performance of the original circuit…

The dedicated MM equalization circuit could also not be implemented in that form, so it was omitted as well. The only downside? A 2 dB lower signal-to-noise ratio. Given the already excellent figures, this is easy to overlook and inaudible…

THE SOUND

is, as one would expect from the VERO, confident, deep-reaching, and offers a large soundstage. The VERO S provides a precise image of the sonic events with a clear focus on individual performers, without drifting into the analytical. Timbre? Plentiful!

The optionally switchable subsonic filter ensures control in the deep bass and effectively prevents uncontrolled wobble of the bass driver and potential feedback.

Also optionally switchable is an additional amplification stage that raises the output voltage to the level common for CD players.

TWEAKS?

As we already discovered with our turntables, the power supply has a not insignificant influence on sonic performance. With amplifiers, this applies to an even greater extent. And so we have left no stone unturned in adapting our LINEAR power supply to the needs of the VERO S. You will be amazed at how great the improvement in sound is…
