Goldring Ethos

The Ethos is an absolute top-class moving coil cartridge with a vital-shank, nude diamond stylus. This polyhedral, line-contact profile was chosen because it features very low tip mass and a large contact area while being very narrow from front to back, even allowing for the undistorted retrieval of ultrasonic frequencies from a recording. To process this information correctly, Goldring's handmade GOL-1 coil unit forms the heart of the Ethos system. Equipped with a hand-wound, cross-shaped, soft iron armature and a low-resonance aircraft-grade aluminum housing, every single cartridge is precisely tuned by our experienced technicians to reliably meet our highest performance requirements to date. The result is that when listening to records, you are deeply immersed in the musical experience... and that is our entire ethos.

Line contact stylus
The line-contact diamond cut offers a large contact area with the groove wall and is very narrow from front to back. This allows the stylus to precisely pick up high-frequency details with minimal groove wear. The vital-shaped shank gives the needle minimal mass at the tip, resulting in excellent tracking characteristics.

Alloy cantilever
The rigid and lightweight alloy cantilever has the ideal length for optimal stability and playing height. This allowed for the reduction of inertia in the suspension system and improved tracking.

Cross-shaped armature
The coils are wound around a cross-shaped armature made of pure Swedish iron with high permeability. The reduced unsprung mass improves the ability of the stylus to follow the groove wall and minimizes crosstalk, thereby enhancing the stereo image.

Optimized suspension
A novel pad made of a special butyl rubber compound ensures optimal damping of the system. Combined with a tensioned tie wire, the cartridge remains ultra-stable even during the loudest and most complex passages.

Neodymium magnet
The very light and powerful neodymium magnet is clamped between two pole pieces. This creates a perfectly uniform magnetic field gap in which the cross-armature is suspended. This allows the Ethos to achieve its extremely linear frequency response, even down to the lowest frequencies.

Aluminum housing
The housing is precisely milled from rigid, low-density aircraft-grade aluminum, which allows for a low effective mass and ensures that unwanted resonances are conducted into the tonearm, where they are effectively "sanded down".
