The ultimate tool for subwoofer integration

The few lucky ones who have already heard a truly well-integrated subwoofer in a high-quality audio system know that its impact can be extraordinarily profound. Of course, one rightly expects an improvement in the low-frequency range, but most are even more astonished, indeed downright shocked, by the transformation that takes place in the playback quality of the main speakers. They open up tonally to an enormous degree and deliver higher dynamics, better imaging, and more detail, especially at low volume levels. Many describe this as the greatest upgrade to their speakers they have ever made.

Over the years, we have calibrated many subwoofer systems in very critical listening environments, and we were frustrated by the limitations of the active crossovers we were working with. We were tired of struggling with "blunt instruments" and felt that a tool with greater precision was required. So, we developed the CR-1 active crossover. When set up correctly, the CR-1 allows for a listening experience where the subwoofers and main speakers—regardless of the manufacturer—become a single unit and deliver a coherent and compelling performance.

The CR-1 active subwoofer crossover was designed by audiophiles for audiophiles. We believe it is second to none, as it offers a powerful combination of subwoofer/satellite tuning functions and is fully committed to the purity of analog signals.

The CR-1 is built around two sets of precise Linkwitz-Riley low-pass and high-pass filters. Multi-stage D/A converters with monolithic ratio matching are used to adjust the filter frequencies of the analog circuit. Compared to traditional approaches, this offers superior tracking behavior and a much more precise balance between the left and right channels.

Another unique feature of the CR-1 is the damping of each filter bank. These damping controls significantly improve the summation across the crossover region by compensating for the frequency response of each speaker system. In the center of the front panel, a single intuitive rotary knob allows for quick adjustment of the relative level between the subwoofer(s) and the main speakers.

To minimize distortion and noise, the CR-1 uses top-tier components in its purely analog audio circuitry: 1% precision resistors, JFET-input operational amplifiers, polypropylene film-and-foil capacitors, and metallized polypropylene film capacitors, to name just a few.

The input/output design of the CR-1 makes it equally adaptable to studio, mastering suite, or two-channel audiophile playback environments. To accommodate dual-mode systems, we also offer a bypass function that allows for a pass-through from a dedicated "Managed Bass Input" on the rear panel to the CR-1's subwoofer outputs. This makes it easy to switch from two-channel to multi-channel mode.
