The XL AIR turntable differs from the Stabi XL DC turntable through the use of an air bearing and an additional bronze platter with a total mass of 44 kg. The Stabi XL DC can be converted to the XL AIR version using the XL AIR kit.

The XL AIR turntable uses an air bearing instead of conventional bearings, which allows for an improvement in two key parameters of turntable design. Air bearings have almost no friction and therefore no vibrations within the bearing itself, thus preventing noise from reaching the cartridge. The second advantage of a properly designed air bearing (not just one that simply floats on a pump) is a higher load capacity. The total mass of the rotating platter is 44 kg, which makes it less susceptible to external influences on the cartridge. The upper platter—as with the XL DC turntable (22 kg)—is a sandwich construction made of aluminum and acrylic plates that are bolted together in a pre-stressed form to dampen any unwanted vibrations. The lower bronze platter (22 kg) is cast and offers good damping properties.

The air bearing requires compressed air to function, which is supplied by the air supply unit.
The air supply unit consists of a compressor and air filters. The turntable's air bearing actually consists of two bearing surfaces. The top surface carries a vertical load, while the cylindrical bore carries the horizontal load.

The air-bearing surfaces are made of porous carbon and therefore have millions of tiny holes to release air pressure. This creates a more uniform pressure in the 5-micron bearing gap at a pressure of 4 bar, making the air bearing stiffer without movement. The turntable's air bearing consists of two solid brass pieces that possess very good damping properties.
