DELA Audio, the Japanese digital music expert, has launched its new flagship: the N1-S38 is an SSD-based digital music library that offers the best sound performance in the company's history by far. It is undoubtedly Melco's reference device.
The N1-S38 is not a modification or revision of existing units. Building on Melco's many years of experience, the N1-S38 has been completely redeveloped. The innovations are comprehensive and affect the entire device architecture, the mainboard with its larger RAM, and the more powerful processor for increased performance.

Completely newly developed mainboard platform

The main feature of the Melco N1 is a completely newly developed mainboard platform with a novel chassis and housing. Thanks to the also newly designed power supply, the N1 reaches a previously unattained level of performance. It combines Melco's decades of experience in digital music storage, transmission, and playback with the consistent further development of the platform with forward-looking features.
An audio-specific, custom-made 3.84 TB SSD drive is connected directly to the data path without an intermediate RAID controller. Precise internal clocking is guaranteed by the renowned Japanese precision manufacturer NDK – just as it was with the previous reference model N10-S38. As a new feature, the N1 offers the option of connecting external 10 MHz clocks.
Like all Melco digital music libraries, the N1-S38 is also handcrafted in Japan.

Completely new chassis and housing

The key to the N1-S38's sophisticated appearance is the striking housing, which benefits from a highly stable construction. At its center is a robust 3 mm thick stainless steel base plate to minimize unwanted vibrations.
A precision-machined, two-tone aluminum housing is fitted to the other five sides, with thicknesses ranging from 2 mm to a generous 5 mm.
The front panel features a unique Melco logo engraved using a special technique. The bold aesthetic continues in the high-contrast housing corners, which are also milled from solid aluminum.
On the front, there are the familiar high-quality Melco control buttons, an easy-to-read OLED display, and a USB port. The low-lying stainless steel base plate of the N1-S38 and the chassis construction built upon it ensure a low center of gravity and prevent unwanted resonances from disturbing the sensitive music signal.

Connectivity

The well-known Melco concept of a dedicated player port for the direct connection of UPnP network players via RJ45 is now implemented via the renowned manufacturer Neutrik – the LAN port is designed in an identical manner.
Following the groundbreaking application of SFP Fibre (Small Form Factor Pluggable) connectivity in the Melco S10 and the recently introduced S100A network audio switch, the N1-S38 also features an SFP port for direct fiber optic connection. To meet high audiophile demands, the new N1-S38 also supports a switchable external 10 MHz clock input – a first for a Melco music library.

Further features

Other specifics incorporated to meet the reference standard include a large, newly developed toroidal transformer (which is mounted on its own sub-chassis and outperforms that of the previous flagship N10/2) as well as the capacitor bank.
