An external phono preamplifier is indispensable if the existing amplifier lacks a turntable input or if the built-in phono stage does not meet the music lover's quality standards. Connection is then made to a line-level input on the amplifier. Every cartridge performs best in an optimal electrical environment. It is therefore advantageous if a phono preamplifier allows for precise adjustment of input capacitance, input resistance, and gain to match the cartridge's requirements.

The device features versatile adjustment options for the input capacitance of MM, moving iron, and high-output MC cartridges, as well as the input resistance for low-output MC cartridges. The input resistance for low-output MC cartridges can be adjusted continuously while listening using the rotary knob on the front panel. Gain is adjustable in three stages. The gain setting is not tied to a specific operating mode. All settings can be used for both MM and MC modes.

In the golden era of analog technology, many records were not cut according to the now-standard RIAA curve. Often, the Decca curve selectable on the device is a better fit. Feel free to experiment with both equalization curves – you cannot go wrong. Your ears decide, and whatever sounds best to you is "right".

Unusual for phono preamplifiers in this price range, the device features balanced inputs and outputs, which minimizes signal interference. Another advantage is the increased signal-to-noise ratio compared to RCA outputs, due to the double output voltage at the XLR terminals.
