"High-end" project

The Phono Box RS2 is the ultimate reference-class phono preamplifier with unique, continuous impedance control during playback. This allows you to track in real-time which loading impedance is perfect for your cartridge. The electronics operate fully symmetrically and fully discretely from input to output.

Discrete circuit

A discrete circuit consists of individual electronic components. These can be “passive” components such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors, as well as “active” components – in our case, transistors. The opposite of this would be an integrated circuit, which uses operational amplifiers in the signal chain. Standard phono preamplifiers with integrated circuits have a few tens or hundreds of components. In comparison, discrete designs use hundreds to thousands of components. This leads to a more extensive and costly design process, but also to the best sound. Countless hours of listening tests have shown that even the best operational amplifiers do not sound as neutral, natural, dynamic, or vivid as a good discrete circuit.

Fully balanced signal path

The Phono Box RS2 uses a fully balanced signal path. Balanced transmissions consist of a "hot" and a "cold" (also referred to as + and –) signal. Both the plus and minus signals effectively carry the same music information, albeit rotated by 180°. A balanced amplifier can now extract the final music information from the +/- signals and subtract any interference that may have been added along the transmission path. In a true, fully balanced amplifier like the Phono Box RS2, the + and – sections of the left and right channels are treated individually, which naturally also requires twice as many amplifier stages. This means twice the space on the circuit board and twice the number of electrical components. The reward: no noise, no interference, and the best possible signal-to-noise ratio.

Split passive EQ

The Phono Box RS2 uses split passive equalization for the RIAA and DECCA curves. Development and implementation are more expensive, but they ensure the most accurate representation of the ideal EQ curve. Split passive equalization allows for better impedance matching and lower deviation from the ideal RIAA or DECCA curve. Experiment with the two settings. You cannot do anything wrong. "Right" is what you like best. Your ears decide.

Extremely versatile setting options

Hardly any other phono preamplifier in the world offers as good options for adjusting gain as the Phono Box RS2: from 40dB (voltage gain of 100x) up to 70dB (voltage gain of 3690x) are possible. With these high gains, a phono preamplifier must be incredibly noise-free to realize these high gain levels without interference. All gain settings can be used for both MM and MC modes.

The load impedance can be adjusted continuously via a potentiometer. You can adjust the impedance seamlessly during playback and immediately evaluate the effect.

Cartridges naturally suffer from small inequalities between the left and right channels – frustrating when you know that the playback chain is otherwise working absolutely perfectly. To correct this, the Phono Box RS2 introduces a new feature that is extremely rare in this price range. With a potentiometer, you can adjust the exact center of the soundstage in a range of 2dB to the left or right – and your audiophile paradise is restored!

Two inputs allow for the operation of two turntables or one turntable with two tonearms. When selecting an input, individual electrical settings made for that input to match the cartridge are automatically loaded.

Steel/aluminum chassis

The Phono Box RS2 features a steel chassis covered by screwed-on aluminum plates. This construction provides very high rigidity and excellent isolation against interference.
