A benchmark in the development of the IE 600 for our engineers was the neutral playback behavior of high-end studio monitors. For this purpose, the acoustic back volume inside the earphone was optimized. The careful tuning provides a presence and tonal intimacy that brings you even closer to your music and reveals new accents and details time and again.

However, it was not easy to achieve this level of balance and naturalness. For example, when similar sounds occur simultaneously in a piece, it can be difficult for the human ear to distinguish all the nuances.

Achieving such confident and natural reproduction posed great challenges for our developers. For instance, masking effects occur when two similar sounds overlap in a recording – the nuances are lost. The IE 600 is therefore equipped with dual-chamber absorbers (D2CA) that absorb masking frequencies, ensuring that even the finest textures of a recording become audible.

HARDER THAN STEEL – EARPHONES FOR ETERNITY

Amorphous metals are a kind of "holy grail" of materials research due to their remarkable properties.

Now, finally, their production has been mastered. And the wait was worth it. The zirconium alloy chosen by Sennheiser for the IE 600 from Heraeus Amloy Technologies has three times the hardness and flexural strength of high-performance steel. Amorphous metals are shock-cooled during production so that, unlike conventional metals, they cannot form a crystalline structure. The result is a satin-finished surface that is exceptionally resistant to corrosion and scratches.

The housing of every IE 600 is manufactured in Germany using 3D printing. The metal powder used can be shaped into any conceivable form – with the tightest manufacturing tolerances. Thus, the chambers and channels of the playback system are created in an additive manufacturing process without the need for milling.

Due to the high costs, materials of this category and the required manufacturing process can only be used for specific tasks. Besides absolute high-end products like the IE 600, this includes the drill head of a NASA Mars rover; there, too, extraordinary durability under extreme conditions is required.

The IE 600 also achieves this exceptional balance in the bass range, where it is capable of reproducing complex passages powerfully and tightly. Its "heart" is the 7 mm Sennheiser TrueResponse transducer. It is responsible for the extra-wide frequency range and the particularly low-distortion playback performance.

AUTOMATED PRODUCTION, MANUAL PROCESSING

The production of the housing from ZR01 amorphous metal takes place in Germany. It includes both automated and manual steps.

The computer-controlled laser sintering process applies a thin layer of metal powder and welds the molten alloy to the underlying, already hardened material. In this way, the earphone takes on its final shape layer by layer. A technician then manually removes any artifacts of the manufacturing process.

This is followed by thorough cleaning, steel shot blasting, polishing, and a complex surface treatment. Only after the housing has gone through all these steps does it attain its final and extremely robust aesthetic. Typical daily use will not leave scratches or other signs of wear on this high-quality housing.

As spectacular and extraordinary as the sound image created by the IE 600 is, its appearance is just as ergonomic and compact.

The gold-plated MMCX connectors are recessed into the housing, which guarantees ideal stability and a secure hold. They are suitable for cables with a diameter of up to 4.8 mm, so you can use the IE 600 with a variety of HiFi components – even those with balanced outputs.

You have the choice here between para-aramid-reinforced unbalanced and balanced cables. Cables with 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm plugs are included. A version with 2.5 mm plugs is available separately. Ear cushions in two versions – silicone and memory foam – in three different sizes each are included in the delivery. Here, you are sure to find a comfortable, optimal fit that allows you to enjoy your music intensely for many hours. Flexible, adjustable ear hooks further increase wearing comfort.
