The Sound of Silence

When playing a vinyl LP, the entire vinyl record, including the paper labels, is set into vibration by the stylus and cantilever of the cartridge, as well as by micro-frictions from the platter bearing. These vibrations and resonances overlay the music signal, creating an imprecise signal that impairs accurate reproduction and the precise localization of musical instruments in space. The Thiele damping weight couples to the top of the vinyl record via three ebony rods on the paper label and transfers the resonances to a multi-ribbed coupling disc in the center of the damping weight. This coupling disc is connected to the housing of the damping weight via a damping gel. The total weight of approx. 400 grams creates the appropriate pressure on the vinyl record and dampens all resonances via the gel. The housing of the damping weight is additionally dampened on the top by ebony inlays. The result of all these measures is a very effective stabilization of the vinyl LP, and thus a clean sound image with very precise localization and reproduction of the musical instruments.
