Product description

In 2014, VPI began cleaning up and streamlining its production line. Part of these measures involved moving away from the multitude of numbers and products and developing a clear, easy-to-understand product line. Both the Classic 1 and the Classic 3 had undergone many changes, and the Classic 2 was not originally intended as a standalone product. Therefore, the decision was made to rebrand the Classic.

The Classic line is a tribute to the great turntables of the past that represented state-of-the-art turntable design. The Classic was the best-selling large turntable VPI has ever produced and still exceeds production today. The worldwide sales figures and rave reviews are based on the superb sound and incredible speed stability – a speed stability usually only known in models costing over $20,000. Our top-of-the-line Classic Signature represents a significant step forward in performance and aesthetics, pushing the boundaries to offer the best-sounding turntable ever at an unmatched price.

The latest Classic Signature features a 0.5-inch thick machined aluminum base bonded to a 1.25-inch thick steel sub-plate, which in turn is bonded to 2-inch thick MDF. This creates a massive and well-damped base that almost eliminates resonances. For the Classic Signature, we have upgraded the tonearm to our JMW 3D-10 tonearm, the bearing unit, the base assembly, and the Discovery wiring from the cartridge to the RCA (or XLR) output jacks.

To complete the aesthetics of this state-of-the-art design, we opted for a deep piano black finish. The Classic Signature is an absolute triumph! Manufacturers who have received it use adjectives such as "Gorgeous," "The quietest turntable I've ever heard," "How can it be so affordable?" and "Speed stability like my digital masters."

The platter is made of 6061 aluminum and stainless steel, weighs 9 kg, and is equipped with a precision inverted bearing. Run-out tolerance +/- 0.025 mm over a 99.1 cm circumference!

Platter bearing support is provided by a Thompson Engineering precision shaft with hardened and polished balls (60 Rockwell) on a PEEK thrust washer. Lateral thrust is handled by graphite-impregnated bronze composite bushings.

The belt runs around the platter through the center of the bearing unit, thus preventing rocking effects and noise.

Master tape level speed stability: Thanks to the rigid mounting of the motor, platter, and tonearm, there are no random movements that could cause speed fluctuations.

Thanks to feedback suppression, the Classic Turntable can be placed near four 15-inch subwoofers and exhibits virtually no feedback.

A precise, low-noise, high-torque 24-pole 300 RPM AC synchronous motor drives the platter via a pulley with an accuracy of +/- 0.0127 mm.

The lack of random movement between motor, platter, and tonearm ensures optimal low-level resolution. This rigidity not only improves speed stability but also allows for the reproduction of low-level information on par with the best turntables in the world and very close to master tapes.

Absolutely solid, resonance-free, laminated, one-piece chassis: This is not a wooden frame, but a massive, laminated, 2.5-inch thick MDF block with a 0.75-inch sandwich of aluminum and steel, which is attached to the top with silicone and long screws through all layers. The chassis weighs 13.6 kg and is absolutely resonance-free.
