Small, but truly fine
"Modern" can also be damn good: For instance, the ultra-efficient Class D output stages of the Waversa WminiAmp MK2 digital integrated amplifier deliver truly stable power from a chassis no larger than a good paperback novel. Enough to keep just about any loudspeaker firmly in check. Furthermore, a bridge mode is even possible.
The Waversa WminiAmp MK2 is a purely digital integrated amplifier. Many music fans are suspicious of fully digital music playback systems—and in many cases, certainly not without reason. However, the reason lies not in any inherent inferiority of digital formats and technologies compared to analog ones. Rather, the digitization of music in its early stages (CD, later MP3, etc.) was not designed for optimal sound, but for cost savings, data efficiency, and easier usability. The signal processing in the Waversa WminiAmp MK2 (and other digital amplifiers from Waversa, such as the Wslim LITE and the Wamp 2.5 MK2) solves a series of previously seemingly unsolvable problems that are unavoidable even with an analog signal chain.
The term "digital amplifier," which is technically not entirely accurate for a classic Class D amplifier, is intended to clarify that the Waversa WminiAmp MK2 possesses fully digital signal processing before the actual Class D stage. The WminiAmp MK2 converts all analog input signals into the PCM format via a high-performance 24-bit A/D converter. An FPGA-based (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip developed by WaversaSystems itself, called WAP (Waversa Audio Processor), then upsamples the PCM signals to 24-bit/768kHz and converts them (incorporating a whole host of further mathematical operations) into the PWM format.
WAP and WAP/X
Waversa has understood that digital music largely ignores harmonics due to the limitations of its resolution compared to real music. WAP and WAP/X provide a remedy: WAP is an FPGA-based audio processor that interprets the digital signal to bring it closer to an analog signal—real music—again. WAP/X, as an extension for WAP, then reconstructs the even-order harmonics of real music (up to the 32nd harmonic) that were lost during digital recording or digitization. This makes even digital music sound poignantly authentic, spatially expansive, and natural.
In addition to the analog balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) inputs, the WminiAmp MK2 also features a coaxial digital input for connecting a digital source with a 44.1kHz data rate, such as a CD player.
